    • "Joe Shapard enlisted in the army at Fort Sam Houston in Au
      gust, 1917, and was assigned to Motorcycle Company No. 1 and sent abroad for active service. On arrival overseas he was transferred to the motor transport service, American Expeditionary Forces, where he has proven of such value as to have received favorable mention in a letter from his captain to authorities in Washington, D.C. He is of unusual physical strength, and previous to entering the army was assistant postmaster at Rockdale." He was separated from military service 1 Jul 1919 at Camp Lee, VA, as a sergeant. In 1922 he joined the Los Angeles Police Force, with which he served until his retirement in 1955.
