WAVELAND - At age 92, Roland Milligan has seen quite a bit in his lifetime, especially when it comes to the town of Waveland where he has spent all of his life.
He has seen the town of Waveland come and go and says the town is now on a rebound and is thriving compared to what it was 10 years ago or so. Because of what he has seen, he will even get a chance to be featured on national television.
Rol, as everyone in town refers to him, has been interviewed, along with several other townspeople, for a news piece which will appear on the ABC Nightly News Sunday July 3 at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
All the notoriety doesnÂ’t seem to bother the retired saw worker.
"I donÂ’t see what all the fuss is about," he said with a chuckle. "I really donÂ’t know why they picked me. I guess when you have been around as long as I have people think you have something important to say. I have lots to say, but IÂ’m not sure how important it is."
ABC news sent a reporter and a film crew of five people to the town and all visited Milligan.
While doing their piece on small towns, he was told that he was the oldest working person in three states.
Milligan has had several professions in his life. He worked on a turkey farm. He and a brother owned the Allis-Chalmers business in Crawfordsville from 1942 until 1975. Then he began a saw shop in Waveland and has been there ever since. His grandson now runs the business with Roland looking over his shoulder.
"I retired for all of two days," he said about his brief retirement after leaving Allis-Chalmers in 1975. "It was great while it lasted."
He now helped out around the shop he used to own, but is now ran by his grandson, David.
"I have been working with Stihl chain saws since the time they first came out," he said. "Stihl and I go back together since 1967 or 1968."
As for the town, Milligan is content and always has been.
"ItÂ’s just a nice little town to live in," he said. "It has about everything you need. Over the last five or 10 years the town has really gone through some changes. ItÂ’s really looking pretty good now, especially compared to what it was. Not everybody is happy with the changes, but overall I think people are feeling good about the changes."
Milligan has raised his five children – sons, Dean, Allan and Alex, and daughters, Sally (Simpson) and Jill (Bowman) – in Waveland. He also has 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grand children and a great-great-grandchild.
"Small towns arenÂ’t for everyone, but this is for me," Milligan said. "This town is full of great people and everyone is willing to help out. This is a great little town and I love it."
Apparently, after talking with many of the townspeople, they all love Roland as well.
Roland married Pauline Roselea BYRD on 23 Mar 1935 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Pauline (daughter of William Daniel BYRD and Delia Frances GOFF) was born on 2 Aug 1914 in Montgomery County, Indiana; died on 21 Apr 1990 in Waveland, Montgomery, Indiana, USA; was buried in Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana, USA.
